How we get it back. Reconsolidating ourselves, the special hell that is compositing on paper, the gift of constructive critique. Walking home alone at night.
This is really well written and inspiring. I relate to the summer feeling. I really love the freeing quality of your hand drawn animation. I’ve been thinking about doing drawn but the coloring part…When you photograph it do you use a stop motion program? How do you composite your animation? Will you trace the pencil lines in marker and/or color it?
Hey Lindsay! I update in every two weeks on how I do everything! I use DragonFrame, as I detail in a prior issue. Feel free to peruse through the archive, because your questions will probably be addressed there in great detail :) I'm trying to answer many of the questions you're asking, myself, btw. So stay tuned, and thanks for reading.
Hand drawn animation is tough work. I don’t think I’d have the patience to do the analog style - nor the room in my place to store mounds of original drawings in hundreds of frames. Shooting or scanning on top of that? And before editing? Yikes… The closest I come to that is using Procreate (and I’ve a Wacom but haven’t used that in a while). I won’t say using anything electronic is as satisfying as drawing/painting the old fashioned way, but otherwise I’d probably never get anything finished with the added non-art related responsibilities I have in my life. Still, I think it takes grit to do anything by hand and take your time in process these days. To me anyway, the satisfaction in the process caused by using your hands to manipulate your work beats a mouse and coding via a machine any day. Admire you and have been following your work and writing for some time - keep going!🌹
Hey! Thank you *so* much for reading, and taking the time to leave this thoughtful comment! I doubly appreciate notes from other practicioners, you get it :)
Yeah, I too have life stuff, pay-the-bills stuff, of course...but there is something so special about hand drawn so. Here I am.
No matter what, you have to follow your heart. Even if it takes you miles and miles to find what you are certain is out there, and many challenging paths which make you tired and discouraged. I’ve the same inclination, I have to keep on through thick and thin - I just have to reach that bright light dancing out there in my mind’s eye. 🤗
